That's the end of our live coverage from Onecricket for the opening encounter of Vivo IPL 14. Stay tuned for tomorrow's match between the Master up against his apprentice. MS led Chennai Super Kings will lock horns against the Delhi Capitals led by the youngest captain the competition Rishabh Pant. Till then it's ta-ta and good night from me, Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and my co-commentators Vikhyat Jain and Nikhil Anand.
Harshal Patel: When they traded me they told me I was part of the plans and would bowl at the death. Absolutely happy to be here to repay the faith showed in me. I didn't know I was the first to get a five-for against Mumbai. Whatever momentum I had I wanted to make use of it. This is my first five-for in 98 matches and to get it against a team like Mumbai is special. I've just been working a lot on my yorker, become more confident in bowling it at different stages of the game. I was always good with length balls and slower balls.
Harshal Patel gets the Man of the Match Award.
Virat Kohli, RCB skipper: Last time we won the first game we played as well. It was important to play agains the strongest opposition to test the depth of your team. Everyone got involved, everyone's got game time. Lot of options in the kitty which helped bring the game back. To be honest, the pitch was looking decent in the first half. I thought the dew might help, but as the ball got slower the ball got slower and the length ball got difficult to get away. That's why all those partnerships were crucial. It's not a ground where you can hit through the line unless the situation demands it. It's not going to be that momentum that you see in the IPL. especially in Chennai. The shot that Pollard got out to, invariably in Wankhede and a couple of other stadiums that's sailing into the stands. Those last six overs for us with the ball were probably the best we've ever had. Harshal is relishing the role. He is going to be our designated death bowler. Very confident about what he wants to bring to the table and as a captain you want someone with that clarity. In T20 cricket that's all you ask from the bowler. And the wickets that he got weren't fluke wickets. He actually wanted the guys to hit the ball where he wanted them caught. Maxi we wanted him to bat at 4. Rajat he's solid, an exciting prospect, plays spin well. We want Maxi to come in after a nice set u, but even if we lose early wickets he becomes a different player. You saw today, he's a different player with 10-15 balls behind him. Changed the momentum for us in the middle overs. It's a difficult one, AB is probably the only player who's so versatile and can do what he did on slow pitches today, so we have to understand. If there's a partnership on, you might see a totally different order. But in a tricky chase you want some options in the back end, where the opposition thinks it's not over till he gets out.
Murali Kartik invites the winning captain Virat Kohli for a conversation.
Harshal Patel gets the Upstox Most Valuable Asset of the Match Award. Gets a trophy a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
Virat Kohli gets the Cred Powerplayer of the Match. He looked in good touch during the powerplay.
Chris Lynn gets the Unacademy Let's Crack it Sixes Award. He smashed three sixes during his knock of 49.
Harshal Patel gets the Dream 11 Game Changer of the Match. Gets a Dream11 Trophy and cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
AB de Villiers get the Safari Super Striker of the Match Award. Gets a trophy and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
Washington Sundar gets the Award for Vivo Perfect catch of the Match. He gets a phone and a cheque of Rs 1 lakh.
Time for the post-match presentation.
AB de Villiers, Man of the Moment: Was an incredible game of cricket, always seems to be against Mumbai. We obviously came in knowing it wasn't going to be easy. I knew halfway it was going to get tough, it's one of those pitches that gets harder as the game goes on. They have a wonderful bowling line up that put us under pressure. [His wicket] There was an easy two in my opinion, but as I started it felt like I was running backwards. Krunal got it spot on with the throw. Absolute pleasure playing alongside Maxwell. I love playing with players like him, fantastic to have someone like that bat ahead of me and Christian behind me. We have a nice little set up. There's a reason why Mumbai have won this trophy five times, there's a lot of aura around them. But that was the challenge, to beat the champions and get a lot of confidence. We did well tonight.
Rohit Sharma, MI skipper: Winning the championship is important, I guess, not the first game. Great fight, we didn't let it go easily. Although the score wasn't something we were happy with. We were 20 short. We made some mistakes, those are bound to happen. We need to move on. [Jansen] is definitely a talent we've identified. When you look at the situation with four overs left they had AB and Christian, that's why we went with Bumrah and Boult to try and get them out. Definitely not an easy pitch to bat on, odd ball was gripping. That's something we could think of in our next few games here. De Villiers batted really well and got them home. In hindsight we can say that [the intensity will take time to arrive]. We haven't had much time together as a group and it was totally opposite in Dubai, where we began preparations a month before. But that's how the IPL has been played over the years, you just got to get in the game as quickly as possible. It can be difficult for teams that have great home records, but that is what sport is, you've got to go away and win. We are fortunate that we're even on the park.
Arya: Earlier in the day it was RCB skipper Virat Kohli who won the toss and elected to field. In came Rohit Sharma and debutant in MI colours Chris Lynn to begin proceedings. Rohit looked in great touch but Lynn looked totally out of sorts to start with but gradually settled into the innings. He had to score some runs especially after running out his skipper. Lynn smashed some lusty blows en route to a knock of 49. He played some brilliant shots against the spinners which is not a trait associated with him. His dismissal didn't slow MI down. Suryakumar Yadav looked in ominous touch and continued his dream run. Ishan Kishan also played some delightful shots but some quick wickets put the defending champions under some pressure. They scored just 31 runs in the last 5 overs losing 6 wickets in the process. Harshal Patel finished with the first five-wicket haul ever against the Mumbai Indians. He bowled with guile and deception and restricted Mumbai Indians to a chasable total of 159 runs. In the end it didn't prove to be enough for the most successive team in the completion.
Arya: He looked in complete command of proceedings and played some exquisite shots en route to a knock of 48 of 27 deliveries. On a pitch where stroke-making wasn't easy, he made look batting look very simple and played some astonishing knocks. He fell short of his crease while attempting a run in the final over but in end the likes of Mohammed Siraj and Harshal Patel held their nerves and got RCB over the line.
Arya: The target of 160 was going to be a tricky one for the Royal Challengers Bangalore given the fact that Mumbai Indians had some world-class bowlers in their ranks. Washington Sundar came out to open the innings with Virat Kohli and the ploy didn't work what so ever. Sundar played a dodgy knock while Kohi went along his merry way and looked in great touch from the outset. The dismissal of Sundar got the youngster Rajat Patidar at the crease and he played a brilliant shot of Trent Boult before getting castled by the Kiwi speedster. Out came Glenn Maxwell who looked in sensational touch and looked a different player from the last edition. He didn't hit a single six in the previous edition and today he looked in mood. Kohli and Maxi worked along a good partnership but Maxwell's dismissal at a crucial juncture brought about one more. Both the set batsmen Kohli and Maxwell were dismissed in quick succession but with Mr 360 still at the crease RCB were well and truly on course. Yet again the Magician lived up to his expectation and pulled out a masterclass.
Arya: What a humdinger to start off Vivo IPL 14. A fascinating game and in the end, Royal Challengers Bangalore holds their nerve and wins the match in the final delivery. Mumbai Indians continues with the thread of not winning the first match of IPL since 2012.

1 Full delivery angling into the stumps and Harshal Patel digs this out and works this down the short fine leg fielder and has enough time to take a single and complete victory. Virat Kohli is up and going and the jinx of MI not being able to win their first game continues.
