It was more of a Fakhar Zaman vs South Africa contest than a Pakistan vs South Africa contest. Like always it was a pleasure bringing all the live updates and commentary for the second encounter. Till the third ODI it's ta-ta and bubbye from me, Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and my co-commentators Akshay Bhide, Arjun Bhalla and Kingshuk Kusari.
Fakhar Zaman, Man of the Match: Feels great but you know it would be much better if we won the game. Tried my level best, but good thing was that we fought till the end...that was the good thing. I was talking to every guy at the crease that if you take 15-20 balls, the wicket is good. But it wasn't easy for newcomers. One side boundary was short, and that was my plan - to target it. I was just waiting for the message, looking for partnership, but that wasn't in our hands. When the run-rate was going over 11, I was just hitting. I was trying, but you know, it's a funny game. Good thing for us was we got close. I can't say if it's my best innings. I enjoyed it, but if we had won I would've said this is my best. But since we didn't, I can't say that.
Babar Azam, Pakistan skipper: Fakhar's innings was one of the best I've seen. Fantastic, unfortunate he couldn't finish it. Till Fakhar was playing, I had hope. I think if he had a few other batsmen stood by with him, we would've won. Fakhar was doing all alone. The mistakes we have done, we will try to fix them next game.
Temba Bavuma, South Africa skipper: Super happy. That's what we came here to do - knew we had to win to stay in the series. The innings he played, probably the best I have come across. The bowlers were trying to be clear. Unfortunately, everything he was trying came off. Credit to him. There's an opportunity for us as a fielding team to dissect what happened in that period and what areas we can improve on. I was thinking about taking wickets when they were seven down, that's why we got Shamsi in, but got to give him credit when it's due. In terms of our batting, I felt batting was tough up front when I came in. In the morning, there is something for the bowlers. When I came in with Quinny, it was about building a partnership and inject some momentum. Allowed one of our first three batsmen play deep allowed Rassie and David to play their cameos. We'll be trying to clear our minds and rest our bodies before the final game. Two games with one day's rest isn't easy. Make sure when we come back for the next ODI, we want to cover our bases. There's that dynamic also, that our IPL boys are going to represent us there, so we'll have some discussions between the coach and the selectors. And hopefully the guys who come in are mentally ready to do it for the team.
Arya: Quinton de Kock was dismissed for 80 while going for a big shot but the partnership between Bavuma and Rassie Van der Dussen took South Africa to a position of strength. Dussen in particular was quite severe and smashed quickfire 60 of 37 deliveries which included 6 fours and 4 sixes. Bavuma fell agonisingly short of a well deserved century but that wasn't meant to be. The late impetus in the innings was provided by David Miller as he smashed a 27 balls half-century which propelled the Proteas to a score of 341 runs in 50 overs.
Arya: Earlier in the day it was the Pakistan skipper Babar Azam who won the toss and opted to field. The hosts started off in a terrific fashion with Aiden Markram, in particular, looking in sublime touch. He played some delightful shots en route to his brief knock of 39 of 34 deliveries which included 4 fours and a couple of sixes. Following his dismissal, it was Quinton de Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma who steadied the ship with a brilliant partnership. They was not in their fluent best but still stayed there and built a partnership which was the order of the day. A partnership of 114 runs set a nice platform for the players to come in.
Arya: Chasing a stiff target of 342 to win, Pakistan didn't start off the way they would have liked after losing Imam-ul-Haq pretty early. However the partnership between Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam brought them back into the game. Both looked in complete command of proceedings and started scoring at a brisk pace. Babar in particular looked in ominous touch before being dismissed by a brilliant delivery by Anrich Nortje. Few more wickets fell in quick succession and all of a sudden it looked that the visitors were staring down the barrel. With more than 130 runs required with just 3 wickets in hand, it looked like the Proteas would run away with the game pretty soon. However, Fakhar Zaman had other ideas as the southpaw started belting the Proteas bowlers all around the park. The southpaw kept Pakistan in the game with some whirlwind hitting and also smashed Tabraiz Shamsi for three sixes in an over. In the end the target proved to be a bit too much as South Africa completed a 17 runs victory.
Arya: What an incredible run-chase it turned out to be in the end. Riding on once in a lifetime knock from Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan almost chased the mammoth target down only to fall short by just 17 runs in the end. Despite the loss, the match well and truly belonged to Fakhar Zaman who smashed the highest ever ODI score by a batsman while chasing. His knock of 193 will definitely rank as one of the very best of all time despite coming in a losing cause.

4 FOUR!!! What a way to finish the over, full delivery outside off and Hasnain carves this away well over the point region and it races off to the boundary ropes. South Africa wins by 17 runs and level the series 1-1.
49.5 Lungi Ngidi to Mohammad Hasnain
4 FOUR!! A slower delivery on the stumps and Hasnain smashes this just over the deep midwicket fielder and finds the boundary, a bit of misjudgment in the deep by Miller and Hasnain gets his second boundary.
49.4 Lungi Ngidi to Mohammad Hasnain
0 Another slower full delivery outside off and Hasnain doesn't make any contact to a big heave down the leg side.
49.3 Lungi Ngidi to Mohammad Hasnain
0 That is a slower full delivery just outside off and Hasnain is way too early into the shot.
49.2 Lungi Ngidi to Mohammad Hasnain
4 FOUR!!! That is a full delivery on the stumps and what a shot first up. Lifts this well over the wide mid-off fielder and finds the boundary.

Fakhar's innings comes to an end in a disheartening manner.
49.1 Lungi Ngidi to Fakhar Zaman
W That is clubbed down the deep extra cover region and what a throw from the deep. A direct hit and Fakhar Zaman is way short of the crease but what a stunning knock from Fakhar Zaman. One of the greatest ODI innings of all time despite coming in a losing cause. Zaman never really thought that the ball was coming to his end.
31 runs required off 6 balls.
Akshay: Fakhar Zaman moves to 192. This is the highest score by a batsman while chasing.
