Arya: So thats all from the commentary box today folks. Do join us for tomorrow's clash between the Hobart Hurricanes and the Brisbane. So till then, tata and babye on the behalf of me, Arya Sekhar Chakraborty and my fellow commentators Akshay Bhide and Kingshuk Kusari.
Alex Hales in the Player of the Match, this is what he had to say after the end of the game- " It's different [with the Powerplay rules] so to have two fewer overs is a different challenge. It's not been an easy start but today I was able to cash in. [The slog sweep] is something I was looking to do tonight. It's a true pitch and I struggled against Zampa last time. It's great to have the crowd in and great to have Sam [Billings] as part of the squad. Adam Milne bowls 150 kph as well.
Arya: Still with Maxwell at the crease, the Stars hoped for a turnaround but with a huge asking rate it never really happened. Barring a few big shits here and there, Maxwell found the going tough and in the end he was dismissed in an attempt to play the big shots. The only positive toward the fag end of the innings for the Stars was the three back to back sixes from Ben Dunk who was brought in as an X factor player. Despite conceding the three back to back sixes, Green actually bowled pretty well throughout the day and finished with a spell of 4/34 in his quota of 4 overs. In the end the target was way too much as the Thunder coasted home by 75 runs.
Arya: The target of 220 was never going to be easy for the Melbourne Stars and they need a brisk start in the powerplay. Spiceman Andre Fletcher and Marcus Stoinis took on the attack and started finding the boundaries on a consistent basis. They shared a quickfire stand of 42 runs in just 4 overs before the departure of Stoinis. From there on it was a mountain too steep to climb for the Stars as they kept losing wickets on a consistent basis. Fletcher followed soon and all of a sudden the Stars were reduced to 89/5 and there was no way back for them.
Arya: A few more wickets fell in the next few overs but Callum Ferguson looked well set and took the charge of taking his team to a total in excess of 200. He was eventually dismissed after scoring a half-century in the 19th over but he had done the damage. In the last few deliveries it was Ben Cutting who smashed a quickfire 20 of just 7 deliveries as the Sydney Thunder registered 219 on the board at the end of their allotted 20 overs, the 3rd highest score in BBL history.
Arya: In came Callum Ferguson and along with Khawaja he shared a small little partnership which never really allowed the Stars to claw their way back into the match after the fall of Hales’ wicket. Both played some delightful shots and when Khawaja was dismissed the Thunders had already out up 128 on the board in the 12th over. They lost youngster Olivier Davies pretty son but it didn’t hamper their scoring rate to be honest.
Arya: He kept tonking sixes after sixes and there was no answer for the Stars’ bowlers infront of his onslaught. Hales raced off to a half-century in a mere 20 deliveries but still he wasn’t finished. He kept going for the big shots and shared a brilliant stand of 89 runs with Usman Khawaja before his departure. His breezy knock of 71 came in a mere 29 deliveries which was laced with 8 fours and 5 huge hits out of the park.
Arya: Earlier in the day it was Melbourne Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell who won the toss and put the Sydney Thunder in and by the end of the day it proved to be a disastrous decision. The Sydney Thunder got off to a rollicking start thanks to a whirlwind show by opener Alex Hales who was ably supported by Usman Khawaja. Hales looked in a murderous mood from the outset and took on the Melbourne Stars’ bowlers with utter disdain.
Arya: It proved to be a thoroughly comprehensive performance from the Sydney Thunder’s as they stormed past the Melbourne Stars by 75 runs to register their 4th win of the competition. Batting first, the Thunder’s posted a huge score of 219 courtesy a sensational knock of 71 from Alex Hales and a good captain’s knock from Callum Ferguson. The target of 220 was always going to be a huge ask for the Melbourne Stars. Eventually they lost by 75 runs with the Thunder’s bowlers restricting them to a below par score of 144.
19.5 Chris Tremain to Adam Zampa
W OUT!!!! On a length outside off, Zampa mistimes the slog and holes out to Green at long on who takes the catch coming in. And that's the end of the match. Thunder beat Stars by 75 runs
19.4 Chris Tremain to Adam Zampa
4 FOUR!!! Banged in short, Zampa pulls it and gets a top edge over keeper for a boundary
19.3 Chris Tremain to Billy Stanlake
W Run Out. A low full toss around off, Stanlake drives it straight to covers and Zampa at the non-striker's end sets off. In the end an easy run out for Tremain as Stanlake is no where in the frame
