BAN vs PAK | Vernon Philander to leave Pakistan team during first Test due to Covid-19

Pakistan bowling consultant, Vernon Philander would be flying out of Chattogram, the venue for the first Test of the two-match series taking place between Bangladesh and Pakistan. He would be doing in the middle of the Test (Day-4) because of the "shutdown of flight operations" in his home country of South Africa. Many countries including Bangladesh had to shut down their flight operations to South Africa due to the development of a new variant of the Coronavirus named Omicron. The operations would be shit down after Monday and hence Philander, who was anyways scheduled to leave for home at the end of the first Test has decided to leave midway. This is not the first event in the cricketing world that has been marred by the new variant. While the Netherlands abandoned its South Africa tour for the Super League after the first match was washed out, the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualification ongoing in Harare, Zimbabwe had to be called off midway as well. It has now been cancelled with teams like Sri Lanka and Thailand left to ruin it as they were not able to progress to the World Cup and Women’s Cricket League respectively even after putting out solid performances. India A team is also currently on tour in South Africa and has not been called back. The senior Indian team is also slated to tour the rainbow nation in the near future and the status f that tour has remained unchanged. It would be interesting to see if changes do take place or not in the coming days as things develop. As fast as the Test match between Bangladesh and Pakistan is concerned, courtesy of Shaheen Afridi’s amazing spell, Pakistan have inched ahead at the end of the third day’s play. Bangladesh, even after taking a lead of 44 runs in the first innings, have managed to add only 39 runs to it and lost its top four players in the cause. They now lead by 83 runs with Mushfiqur Rahim and Yasir Ali at the crease and last innings’ centurion Liton Das and all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz still to come.

Pakistan looking to rope in Gary Kirsten as head coach; Peter Moores, Simon Katich also in reckoning

Former South Africa batsman Gary Kirsten, who was India’s coach in their successful World Cup triumph in the 2011 edition, is one of the three options on the Pakistan Cricket Board’s radar for the role of head coach, The Indian Express reported. Apart from Kirsten, others such as Peter Moores and Simon Katich are also in contention to occupy the position left vacant after the abrupt departure by Misbah-ul-Haq earlier last month. Kirsten was credited for India’s World Cup triumph in 2011 and his ability to bring calmness in the team management has been highly spoken of on the world stage. After leaving India, he took the responsibility of coaching his home side South Africa and led them to the number one rankings in Test matches in 2012. Peter Moores was England’s head coach on two occasions but was sacked from his duties both times. First, he was sacked in the year 2009 after England slipped to a series of defeats against India and the resignation of Kevin Pietersen from England’s captaincy. Simon Katich was the assistant coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League before he took up the responsibility of a head coach of the Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had relinquished his post with the RCB after the completion of the first phase of IPL 2021 and hence he could also be available for the role with the Pakistan side.

Pakistan T20 World Cup squad to travel with families, leave Lahore on October 15

The Pakistan Senior Men’s team would be leaving Lahore on October 15th to travel to the United Arab Emirates for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2021. The entire squad has been allowed to take their families alongside them on the chartered flight. The newly appointed Pakistan coaches, Vernon Philander and Matthew Hayden would be joining the side on October 7th and 16th respectively. They took the place of bowling coach Waqar Younis and head coach Misbah-ul-Haq respectively. Senior cricket journalist from Pakistan, Saj Sadiq informed about the latest developments on his official Twitter handle. Earlier on October 5th, Imad Wasim and Shaheen Afridi were allowed to leave the bio-bubble made for National T20 2021 to spend some time with tier loved ones in Lahore as the tournament has moved to Lahore from Rawalpindi for its second leg. The Pakistan team were robbed of an ideal preparation ahead of the all-important tournament as New Zealand abandoned its tour just hours ahead of the start of the first ODI between the two teams. The effect that abandonment citing security reasons rubbed on to England Men’s and Women’s teams who were scheduled to tour Pakistan in mid-October and that tour was also postponed. Thus to prepare the squad, the National T20 Cup, which is a domestic T20 tournament, different from Pakistan Super League, was staged at a huge level in Rawalpindi and Lahore. The National T20 final will be played on October 13th.

Pakistan appoint Matthew Hayden, Vernon Philander as 'consultant coaches' for T20 World Cup

Pakistan appoint Matthew Hayden, Vernon Philander as 'consultant coaches' for T20 World Cup

Pakistan have announced two prominent additions to the support staff for the upcoming T20 World Cup with former Australian opener Matthew Hayden and South Africa pacer Vernon Philander joining the side as batting bowling respectively. The duo will replace the Pakistani duo of Misbah-ul-Haq and Waqar Younis who resigned from their post of the head coach and bowling coach earlier this month. These developments have come on the day when former Pakistan cricketer and a prominent voice in the world of cricket, Ramij Raza has taken over the chairmanship of the Pakistan Cricket Board. “One of my key focuses will be to help introduce in the Pakistan men’s cricket team the same culture, mindset, attitude and approach that once made Pakistan one of the most feared cricket playing nations,” Raza said after taking over the reins of the PCB and one could argue if someone can be better than Hayden to instil a fearless attitude in players. “The Australian can bring some aggression into the team. He has experience of World Cups and was a world-class player himself. Having an Australian in the dressing room will be of great benefit for us,” Raza said of Hayden. It was always expected the Raza’s elevation to the top of the PCB will bring some changes in the side with two global events coming up and the signing up of Hayden and Philander is a perfect start to the expectations. Interestingly, Hayden has also signed up for commentary in the second half of the Indian Premier League due to start on September 19 and hence it is unlikely that the left-hander would be able to do the dual role in such a quick time.
