Wrist spinners have become an integral part of any T20 sides and being a leg-spinner, Murugan Ashwin has been a sought after bowler in the Indian Premier League (IPL) especially in the last few years. After finishing the 2015-16 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy as the second-highest wicket-taker for Tamil Nadu with 10 wickets under his belt and a month later he was bought by the Rising Pune Supergiant for a whopping INR 4.5 crores.
Being a regular net bowler for the Chennai Super Kings prior to their suspension for two years ahead of the 2016 season, the Dhoni-Fleming duo had the utmost faith in the leggie and signed him up for the Rising Pune Supergiant for a big amount. He was quite impressive in the opportunities he got and ended the tournament with 10 wickets under his belt.
The talented spinner missed out the next season due to the emergence of Washington Sundar, his statemate. Sundar’s dominant performance with the ball in the powerplay meant M Ashwin falling behind in the pecking order in the RPS team. However, his wicket-taking abilities made Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) bid for him in the 2018 auctions and he was bought at INR 2.2 crores.
Ashwin’s initial years were spent at the Cricket Academy run by CS Suresh Kumar who is a former Tamil Nadu batsman. He then took the next leap and was picked in the senior squad on the back of some consistent performances for his U23 stateside.
After getting released from Rising Pune Supergiant, Ashwin was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for Rs 1 crore but had to warm the benches for the whole tournament and didn’t get a single match. He was released next season and despite being bought by RCB for a good amount he had to warm the benches again due to the presence of Yuzvendra Chahal in the RCB playing XI.
He was picked for his base price of Rs 20 lakhs by the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) in 2019 and went on to have a pretty mediocre season with them in 2019. However, he repaid the faith shown in him by the team management as he finished with 10 wickets in 9 matches at an impressive average of 23 and an economy rate of 7.46. Having been retained by Punjab Kings (the new name of Kings XI Punjab), Ashwin will look to replicate some of his good work from the last year if not better that.
