We could've folded, but they really gave us an opportunity: Fleming on CSK's young fast-bowling pair

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have been officially knocked out of the race for playoffs of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 after being defeated by Mumbai Indians (MI) in the 59th match of the tournament in Mumbai. Put in to bat first, CSK were all out for 97, and MI consumed 14.5 overs to chase down the total with five wickets in hand. This edition of IPL will be the first occasion where neither of the two most successful clubs in the tournament's history qualified for the playoffs. Unfortunately, neither the CSK batters nor the bowlers could live up to the expectations. Thus, CSK head coach Stephen Fleming said they could learn a lot over the next pair of games and plan for the next. "There are some really positive signs. I thought the new ball bowling of Simarjeet and Mukesh was outstanding. We've been developing Mukesh all the way through the season so for him to now feel confident enough to bowl a spell like that... and Simarjeet is only 3-4 games in and he made some good gains," Fleming said after the match. On the other hand, left-armer Mukesh Choudhary has done quite well swinging the new ball and troubling Mumbai batters even with a small target on the board. And this growth has happened because of Dhoni's trust and guidance in him to pick up wickets in the powerplay in the absence of their marquee seamer Deepak Chahar. The Bhilwara-born bowler picked up 11 of his 16 wickets in the powerplay. On Thursday, his spell of 3 for 23 played a crucial role in reducing Mumbai to 33 for four inside the first six overs. "Irrespective of how the wicket is, anything below 130 is very difficult to defend, but still, what I asked the bowlers was to show a lot of character, put the opposition under pressure. Forget about the result, and I feel both the youngsters, both the fast bowlers, they bowled really well," Dhoni commented on Choudhary's super-spell. "We could've folded but they really gave us an opportunity. Both of them bowled well. Mukesh in particular had the ball really swinging well and Simerjeet has got some deceptive pace so we're really positive about that pairing going forward. So that's a positive along with Deepak Chahar to come back into the side, so we've got some good options with the new ball," Fleming concluded. CSK will next play against Gujarat Titans on May 15 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

IPL 2022 | MI vs CSK | Mumbai Indians dump Chennai Super Kings' playoff dreams

The second round of ‘El Clasico’ saw Mumbai Indians (MI) play spoil-sport to Chennai Super Kings' (CSK) playoff plans, as the defending champions suffered a mammoth defeat in the 59th game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Thursday. Opting to bowl first, MI were off to a dream start as their pacers breathed fire in the powerplay overs. Albeit, CSK were at the receiving end of a controversial dismissal for their main man, Devon Conway, who could not opt for a DRS (due to a power outage in the stadium). After another howler from the umpire, the MS Dhoni-led unit was completely left rattled. From Ruturaj Gaikwad to Dwayne Bravo, the MI bowlers sent everyone packing. In the first over itself, Daniel Sams shone in front of the Wankhede crowd, claiming the wickets of Conway and Moeen Ali. If Sams's early onslaught wasn't enough, Jasprit Bumrah bamboozled Robin Uthappa through an out-swinging delivery, leading to a leg-before dismissal. Ambati Rayudu did play a few aggressive strokes, but his uncomfortable stay at the crease was cut short by a peach from Riley Meredith. CSK skipper MS Dhoni was the last man standing for his team with no support from the other end. Dhoni, who usually starts off slow, took the attack to the opposition straightaway. He took the calculative risks off MI's spin-twins, Kumar Kartikeya and Hrithik Shokeen. However, as wickets continued to tumble, CSK never seemed in control. Dhoni struck a 39-run partnership with Dwayne Bravo, but after the latter's wicket fell, it all came down to the talismanic wicket-keeper batsman. As it was the final ball of the 16th over, Dhoni, in a bid to retain strike, forced Mukesh Choudhary for a non-existing single, who could not make it to the other end in time, courtesy of Ishan Kishan, who hit the bulls-eye. The Super Kings finished at 97/10, in 16 overs, their second-lowest in the history of IPL. The CSK bowlers were left with an improbable task of defending a total of sorts which has never been done in the league's history. Still, Choudhary, along with Simarjeet Singh came out hard on MI's batters, swinging the ball both ways in the initial overs. The pace duo bowled their four overs on the trot, providing CSK with the wickets of Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Sams and Tristan Stubbs. Mumbai found themselves in a spot of bother, reeling at 33/4. But the two MI youngsters, Tilak Varma and Hrithik Shokeen watched out the spells of Mukesh and Simarjeet and then constantly rotated the strike as the required rate was never a thing to worry about. While Shokeen fell just at the brink of a win, Tim David flexed his muscles and sent a few mighty hits to the crowd to seal the match for MI by five wickets. For his decisive spell of bowling, Sams walked away with the 'Player of the Match' title. Brief scores: Chennai Super Kings - 97/10 (16) MS Dhoni 36*(33), Dwayne Bravo 12(15); Daniel Sams 3-16 (4), Kumar Kartikeya 2-22 (3) Mumbai Indians - 103/5 (14.5) Tilak Varma 34*(32), Rohit Sharma 18(14); Mukesh Choudhary 3-23 (4), Simarjeet Singh 1-22 (4) Mumbai Indians won by five wickets.

IPL 2022 | 'Pressure nahi lena, bass run mat dena, wicket ayega' - MS Dhoni's pep talk to Mukesh Choudhary

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) left-arm seamer Mukesh Choudhary is living his dream of playing alongside his childhood hero, legendary MS Dhoni. After all, it was Dhoni's exploits against Sri Lanka in the 2011 ODI World Cup final that inspired the then 15-year-old young boy from Rajasthan to take up the sport. "Whenever I see that winning six, I get goosebumps. The moment Dhoni sir hit that winning six and hugged Yuvraj Singh, I decided I would also aim to play for India someday. I used to play cricket, but I began taking the game more seriously after that historic moment. The 2011 World Cup team inspired me a lot. I spoke about that triumph with Dhoni sir. He has an abundance of knowledge," Choudhary told TOI. Last season, the left-arm seamer was part of CSK as a net bowler and was picked at a base price of INR 20 lakhs at the mega-auction earlier this year. With Deepak Chahar getting ruled out due to injury, the onus of leading the attack fell on his young shoulders. Choudhary did not have a great start as he leaked many runs in his first four outings while managing just four wickets. However, a pep talk with MSD ahead of the fixture against the Mumbai Indians worked wonders for the young lad as he claimed three wickets in what turned out to be a match-winning performance. "Dhoni sir's guidance has helped me a lot. I have been bowling in the powerplay and got wickets and controlled the flow of runs. I swing the ball and don't let a batsman score. I create pressure. A batsman will try to score under pressure, he will play some rushed shots and lose his wicket," the left-armer said. "Dhoni sir has asked me to prepare for the death overs now. He said you have been bowling in the powerplay and now be ready to bowl in the death overs. He said - 'pressure nahi lena, bass run mat dena, wicket ayega' (Don't take pressure, just don't leak runs, wickets will come). I am learning each day under Dhoni sir," Choudhary revealed. The southpaw backed it up with a match-winning four-wicket haul against the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the last game and he'll hope to continue with the good work in the upcoming fixtures.
