Player Bio

Wayne Lee Madsen is a top-order batsman who represents Derbyshire at the county level. He was born and raised in South Africa and played four first-class seasons before shifting base to the United Kingdom to pursue a full-time career. Since his inclusion in Derbyshire, Madsen has taken giant strides to become an integral part of the county.

The Durban-born batsman made his first-class debut for KwaZulu-Natal in 2004. After his stint in South Africa, the right-handed middle-order batsman moved to Derbyshire in 2008. He started his cricket with the county’s second-grade team before securing a two-year contract with Derbyshire.

Madsen had a staggering start to his Championship career where he hammered two hundred in four games at an average of 57.78. In 2012, he became the captain of the county and flourished in his maiden season as a leader. The skipper scored 231 against Northamptonshire and then was involved in a ninth-wicket stand of 261 with Tom Poynton. However, the Derbyshireman stepped down from the captaincy role in 2016.

After gaining UK citizenship in February 2015, Madsen announced that he hoped to represent England in the future. The dasher has done well in the domestic circles since his debut in 2009 but hasn’t performed anything door-breaking to enter the highest level.

Over the years, the Derbyshire batsman has played various leagues across the globe. In 2019, Madsen was picked by Peshawar Zalmi to represent the franchise in Pakistan Super League, the following season, he was selected by Multan Sultans as a replacement. He has also been featured in the T10 Abu Dhabi League to play for the home team.

In 2021, the Manchester Originals drafted Madsen into the squad for the inaugural season of 'The Hundred'. He definitely brings tons of experience to the franchise and can lethally pair with coach Simon Katich.
