Mahmudul Hasan Joy suffers injury, ruled out of remainder of New Zealand tour
Bangladesh opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy has been ruled out of the second and final Test of the series on the tour of New Zealand due to a finger injury. He has suffered a cut in his right hand that will require stitches and he won’t be able to make it into the playing XI for the second Test. "Mahmudul got a cut injury on his right hand in between third and fourth finger while fielding and he required three stitches. He will be under observation for seven to ten days. We are providing him all the medication that is required,” BCB physio Bayzidul Islam said. Joy was the chief architect of a strong batting performance by Bangladesh in the first innings of the ongoing Test match in Mount Maunganui. He batted with impeccable patience and scored a valuable 78 runs that laid the foundation for a mammoth 458 in the first innings and paved the way for a lead of 130 runs. Joy made his debut towards the end of the last year against Pakistan and had a disastrous start to his Test career. However, he has turned his fortunes around with a solid performance against New Zealand.

A 103-run partnership between Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Najmul Hossain Shanto has put Bangladesh in a position that they could have only dreamt of before starting the Test series against the hosts New Zealand. Before their partnership, Joy has had a decent opening partnership with Shadman Islam to make Bangladesh look like a formidable Test side. The trio batted with impeccable patience for the large part of their stays at the crease and was rewarded with fortunate moments when they committed small mistakes which are bound to happen against the bowling attack comprising of Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Neil Wagner and Kyle Jamieson. Bangladesh would be hoping Mahmudul Hasan Joy, who is batting unbeaten on 70 runs would go on and make a big hundred on the third day of the Test while others rise to the occasion and at least come closer to or surpass the Blackcaps’ first innings total. If they can manage to pull off 153 runs more, they can create some trouble for the Blackcaps with their spinner on a dry-looking pitch in Mount Maunganui.

Bangladesh announced a 15 member squad for the two-match Test series against Pakistan starting November 26 at Chattogram. While Shakib Al Hasan has been named as probable in the squad and his entry is subject to fitness clearance, Two new names in Batter Mahmudul Hasan Joy and fast bowler Rejaur Rahman Raja have earned their maiden call ups for Bangladesh. The decision to include Joy and Raja have been included as experienced players such as Mahmudullah, Shoriful Islam and Taskin Ahmed have not been named in the squad due to retirement and injury concerns. "It is still early days for him but Mahmudul has shown good temperament for the longer version. With injury concerns to Taskin (Ahmed) and Shoriful (Islam), we needed to keep our pace-bowling options open and Raja got the nod. We have been monitoring his performances in first-class competitions. He is strong and energetic and has a knack for taking wickets,” Minhajul Abedin, the Bangladesh chief selector said. Both Joy and Raja did well in the ongoing National Cricket League. While the 21-year-old Joy, who was part of the Bangladesh Under-19 World Cup-winning squad made back-to-back centuries for Chattogram Division, the 22-year-old Raja, who plays for Sylhet Division, took 12 wickets at an average of 16.91, with best match figures of 8 for 82. The rest of the squad has experience in the likes of skipper Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das with the bat and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Taijul Islam and Eabadot Hossain. Pakistan clean swept the T20I series 3-0 and would look to do the same in the two-match Test series which is part of the World Test Championship 2021-23.
