3:50 PM IST | Ovaise: The inevitable had happened right at the brink of 13 minutes, Lancashire have lost their final wicket and Essex have won the game by an innings and 56 runs.

Essex were in the driver’s seat throughout this test match, right from day one when their batters looked quite solid on a pitch that had some lateral movement, with the overhead conditions being overcast throughout the batting stint. They were eventually dismissed for 391 on day two, thanks to an attacking 72 from Snater, Dan Lawrence, who had to call for a runner after tweaking his right hamstring, went on to make magnificent 120 runs. There were two interruptions because of inclement weather, one in the 1st session because of with about 8 overs were lost and the entire last session got washed out without a ball being bowled.

Lancashire got off to a disastrous start, the overhead conditions were dark and gloomy and lots of movement was seen both ways, this made life extremely tough for the top order batters and the short opening resistance was ended in the 5th over with just 5 runs on the board. It was a downslide from then, none of the batters could put up any resistance, Simon Cook got the first wicket for Essex and  Porter and Snater also chipped in with wickets. Some of the shots played were very poor and Apart from Dane Vilas none of the batters could even get into the double figures on Day 2. Josh Bohannon who impressed one and all in the previous encounter was sent back to the dressing room on a duck after facing 10 deliveries while Croft was out on a golden duck.

On the 3rd day, in the first session, Salt and co came out to bat with positive intent, it lasted briefly as the hosts were bundled out for just 103 runs. Lancashire was asked to follow on, and the second innings started out in a disastrous fashion again, Keaton Jennings faced 17 balls and was dismissed for a duck by James Porter. The hosts were 2-1 in 5.5 when Josh Bohannon walked in and joined Luke Well in the middle, the pair were quite slow but were able to play the swinging ball well, In the 23rd over, Josh Bohannon was sent back to the dressing room by Simon Harmer and he was soon followed by Luke Well in the 30th over. Steven Croft and Philip Salt stitched up a magnificent partnership and took Lancashire past the 100 runs mark. The South African Spinner, Simon Harmer was brought back into the attack and manages to break the partnership and tore through the rest of the batting line out, picking up 5-89 in his 19 over. The play was extended by half an hour on day 3 and the visitor were on the brink of victory, they managed to pick up 9 wickets but the last wicket stand between James Anderson and Luke Wood ensured that this match goes to Day number 4.

The tail-end resistances lasted for 13 minutes on Day 4 and James Porter hit the final nail in the coffin by dismissing Luke Wood. Essex were handed a huge victory of an innings and 56 runs which put them in a strong position in the County Division-One, 2022.
