Milestone
That is all we have from the opening encounter. We will be back for the 2nd ODI on 21st January. Till then, it's ta-ta and goodnight from me (Arya Sekhar Chakraborty), my fellow commentators Sourya Chowdhury and Arijit Kundu and our scorer Zeeshan Naiyer.

Rassie van der Dussen, man of the match: โ€œThe key for me was to up the intensity and because the ball was spinning I went into my sweeps and reverse sweeps early on to put the pressure on them. We got a partnership going and that proved key.  I came in at 60 odd for three under pressure and yes the tough run chases in the Tests did help us in our confidence. All in all a good day for the batting unit. When Shikhar and Virat were going we were under pressure and struggling a little but once we got those wickets we were in It because it was tough for someone new coming in on this wicket. We have been on a long journey with this team and our world class coaching staff, we have spoken a lot about how to play and how to come out in the field. We are getting some results in the group now.

Temba Bavuma, winning captain: " We probably played close to the perfect game. It was quite hot and the conditions difficult, we will take confidence from this. The pitch did not improve significantly, I looked to play in the gaps and plug away while Rassie brought in the energy and verve to the partnership, my role was to support him. Yeah Jansen had a good debut, someone who we feel can take wickets with the new as well come back with the older. Aiden is useful with the new ball he can get it to skid sometimes, we are always under pressure for the 6th bowler but Aiden slips in some great overs. Andile understood the situation and he came in when the wicket was getting slow, he is a big team player with a lot of experience in ODIs. We are using Shamsi a bit differently and he is doing a job in the depth, the spinners are doing well. De Kock is a big important player for us."

Kl Rahul| Losing captain (India): "It's a nice game, yeah its nice game actually. We will look to get  more wickets in the middle overs actually. We were going well. It looked like we would chase it down but the South Africa bowlers really bowled well. I dont know really how the wicket played in the later half but speaking to Virat and Shikhar later it was known that it was really a good wicket to bat. You just need to take your time to settle and then accelerate. Yeah, Rassie and Temba really batted well. Two people who bat at no.4 and 5 and bats so deep its really good. We needed someone like that who could take us too deep and we would go par the score. Yeah, the talk in the dressing room was we could have given 15-20 runs less. Yeah again, we didn't get those wickets in the middle again. I think we were on course towards the chase but a few wickets there and just gone. Offcourse these games are important. we want to go there and win games for our country. We haven't played ODI game for a while and go there and lead into the world cup. We will learn from mistakes and learn from there and go on."
Time for the post-match presentation.
Arya: Earlier in the day, it was the South African skipper Temba Bavuma who won the toss and opted to bat. The start wasn't quite the ideal one for the home team as they lost Janneman Malan to Jasprit Bumrah just in the 5th over. It was a beautiful away swinger that took the outside edge and was safely taken by Pant. De Kock also looked in good touch but it was the magic of Ashwin which outfoxed De Kock.

Aiden Markram was dismissed in quick succession as well as South Africa lost three wickets pretty early. They needed a partnership badly and boy what an effort it was from Temba Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen to get their side to a score of 296 runs. It was batting of the highest order from the two and it never really looked like a pitch where so many top-order South African batsmen struggled.

Bavuma took his time initially and then played some delightful shots en route to a well-crafted century. He played the anchor's role while Dussen was the flamboyant one who derailed the Indian bowling line-up in the final stretch of the innings. It was an outrageous innings of 129 which came in just 96 deliveries which was studded with 9 fours and four sixes. It was their efforts that got them to a competitive score of 296 and they would have certainly taken that at the start of the day.

Arya: The run-chase was never going to be a straightforward one for the Men in Blue but given their top strong top three, India should have surely backed themselves to chase that down. It was a decent start from the opening duo and Dhawan in particular latched onto anything loose. It was some sensible batting before Aiden Markram bowled a good delivery to send back Rahul to the pavilion. India needed a partnership between the stand-in skipper and the former skipper and they provided exactly what the doctor ordered.

Dhawan was the flamboyant of the two and never missed out on any opportunities whenever he was presented with one by the Proteas. Kohli also looked unfazed and without any fuss, he reached a well-compiled half-century. He rotated the strike pretty well and his partnership with Dhawan perfectly set up the run chase. However, it was a Keshav Maharaj special which brought about Dhawan's downfall. That turned sharply from a length to beat his inside edge and the stumps were disturbed.

In quick succession, Kohli was also dismissed but India was still in a comfortable position needing just around 6.50 runs per over to chase it down. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant would have hoped to take the team forward but both fell in quick intervals which further put India on the backfoot. Debutant Venkatesh Iyer couldn't make an impact either as India collapsed to 188/6 from 136/1.

It was always going to be a tall task from there on. Shardul Thakur like the Test match looked in good touch but it was too much for him. He did score his maiden ODI half-century but he was well aware of the fact that it was coming in a losing cause. The pick of the South African bowlers was Andile Phehlukwayo bagging 2/26 while Ngidi and Shamsi also chipped in with a couple of wickets.
