That's it from the first encounter of the 2022 ICC Women's World Cup between West Indies and New Zealand. This was Badal Pareek along with Saurabh Saket and Anirudh Modi. Do join us for other coverages from across the globe (IND vs SL, PAK vs AUS) Will see you soon until then stay safe.
Stafanie Taylor | Winning Captain: "The way Matthews played today set the game up for us. We spoke about how we needed to get over 200 and today we got to 260. We wanted to be competitive and the way we played today was competitive. She was pretty settled in the middle order but she had to go up the order today. It was difficult for her but we today her she is the best for the job and she did. New Zealand is a great chasing team but we kept the focus on ourselves and decided to bat first. Dottin wasn't ready to bowl yet and she stood up and did it for us. Dottin asked for the ball and she did it for the team. She did her thing."
Sophie Devine | Losing Captain: "Full credit to the West Indies, Hayley Matthews brilliant, but to do what Dottin did in the 50th over. It was a tough contest, it's sad to lose so close but we would like to take the positives from the game. I tried to take the run rate since we were looking to chase down the total but the last over changed the game I guess. Playing Bangladesh will be exciting, they are a dangerous side and bring a lot of enthusiasm in with them, it's quite contagious, we've seen that before and we hope we can get a positive result."
Hayley Matthews | Player of the Match: "I think the fact that we won right now, winning against a team like New Zealand in their own backyard is a special moment for us. I think World Cups are really important and for me to put on a good performance in the first match really means a lot. I'm glad we have come here and shown what we can do and we hope to continue it further."
It was a battle between two magnificent tons and in the end, Matthews's brilliant knock of 119 helps West Indies women win the match by 3 runs.

Despite dropping numerous catches the West Indies women somehow have pulled this off, they have managed to win this thriller encounter in the very last over.

Earlier in the day the white herns won the toss and elected to bowl first. New Zealand women's had a good start to the match. They managed to pick up the wickets of Deandra Dottin and Kycia Knight within the power play, things took a big turn for them as Stephanie Taylor and Hayley Matthews put up a 66 run partnership for their side.

Lea managed to break this partnership by picking up the wicket of Taylor. Things didn't really change much as Matthews stitched another brilliant partnership with Cambell. Matthews was in full control of her powers and she slowly closed in one her hundred. Amelia Kerr managed to get rid of Cambell but they couldn't stop the flow of the run. Matthews completed her ton and the West Indies were in a comfortable position with over 200 runs on the board. She was dismissed on 119 and they did a few too many wickets towards the end but still managed to score 259 runs in their quota of overs.

The White Herns had a huge target of 260 runs and they started off in the worst possible fashion as they lost Suzie  Bates in a very unlucky fashion. It was all about Sophie Devine as she managed to stitch a partnership with everyone and took her team slowly closer to that total.

Wickets kept tumbling at the other end and Devine kept going. She had a good little partnership with Satterthwaite and one with Katey Martin part of these two she hardly had any support whatsoever. She went on to complete a magnificent ton and keep her side in the thick of the things before getting out before the death overs. Martin was still out there and she was joined by Kerr, the two batters did a wonderful job and dragged it to the final over of the game where they needed 6 runs off the final over. The final over turned out to be a nightmare for the New Zealand batters as Dottin who was bowling her first over of the match picked up both the set batters. 4 runs were needed off the last 2 balls and they just had a wicket in hand. A mix up in the middle resulted in them losing their last wicket and West Indies won the match by 3 runs.
49.5 D Dottin to F Jonas
W WICKET!! What a dramatic end to this contest, good length on the stumps as the batter misses the ball as it sails to the keeper, they look to take a single but miscommunication between the two batters and Dottin dislodges the bails at the non strikers end, this is a brilliant finish to the opening contest of the World Cup.

W WICKET!! Dotty Martin you beauty, this is just outstanding from the West Indian ace, good length delivery just away from the batter who looks to loft in away but does not get the timing right and hands an easy catch to Henry at mid off who makes no mistakes this time around and grabs onto the ball.
49.3 D Dottin to H Rowe
1 Good length delivery on the stumps as Rowe plays it just past the bowler for a single.

49.2 D Dottin to K Martin
W WICKET!! This game is filled with twist and turns, just when you through West Indies were out of the contest, Dottin has picked up the dangerous Katey Martin. Full length delivery on the stumps as Martin tries to flick it away but misses and the ball hits her square on the pads, loud shout here and up goes the finger, Martin takes a review out of desperation but the decision remains.
49.1 D Dottin to J Kerr
1 Dottin to bowl the final over, she hasn't bowled a single over tonight, this pressure! Full and outside the stumps as Kerr hits it hard, but brilliant fielding from the player at mid off who saves three runs for her side.
