Alex Hales Player of the Match: "No it wasn't an easy wicket. Very difficult to start on. Could get better as we went along. Tried to enjoy it as much as I could. I went better as I went along. My 3rd year at the Thunder and we are enjoying ourselves. Just in isolation, and I am doing well. Not superstitious and good to be back enjoying yourself. I am happy to be back and scoring runs and doing well for the team really helps me. I am happy with the headspace that I am in. "
Hobart Hurricanes won the toss and decided to bat first. They managed to put on 139 in their 20 overs. The total wasn't big enough and as a result, the Thunders chased it down in 17.2 overs and won the match by 9 wickets.
The explosive top order of the Hurricanes couldn't get going in the first innings. McDermott did score 38 runs but it was unlike him as he took 34 balls to get there. Handscomb was the other one who did occupy the crease for a while but couldn't score with a decent strike rate. The Thunders were on spot with the ball, they kept the scoring rate down and forced mistakes out of the Hurricanes batters. A bit of aggressive batting towards the end of the innings helped them get to some sort of a total.
The Thunders on the other hand were off to a solid start thanks to Hales and Gilkes. But, once the spinners came on things did get difficult for the batters. Short dismissed Gilkes and post that the scoring rate dropped significantly. Sangha the stand-in captain and Hales stayed out there in the middle. They didn't panic and managed to stitch a decent partnership. After a point in time, it became easier for them and they started scoring freely. Hales went all guns blazing in the power surge. They scored 32 runs off 12 balls in the power surge. The Thunders managed to rap it up with 16 balls remaining. Hales finished at 80* off 56 balls and Sangha was 35* off 31 balls. The Thunders won by 9 wickets at the end.
17.2 S Lamichhane to J Sangha
4 Short and wide, Sangha finishes it off in style as he square drives it through point for a boundary to win it for Thunder. Sydney Thunder wins this by 9 wickets with 16 balls to spare.
17.1 S Lamichhane to J Sangha
0 Fuller ball outside off, Sangha hits it to covers.
Just four needed now off the last 3 over.
19 runs off the second power surge over. Hales is in the zone and he is hitting them all around the park.
