Milestone
So, that is it from me, Karthik Raj and my co-commentators, Aryasekhar Chakraborty and Anurag Singh from this match. Do join OneCricket's coverage of the remainder of the IPL too.
Padikkal: It's been special. I could only wait my turn. When I was down with COVID, all I was thinking of was to come here and play the first match here. I couldn't do that but was keen to contribute to the team's win. The wicket was coming on really well and we got a good start. When you get into a partnership like that, it helps as runs come from both ends. (Whether he was worried about the 100) Not really, that's what I was telling Virat to go for it. For me it's not about getting to a hundred, I wouldn't mind missing out on hundreds as long as I contribute to team's wins. Throughout the innings there were times when he was going better and then I was going better. Rotation of strike is important. We just clicked well.
Devdutt Padikkal has been predictably named as the 'Player of the Match'
Virat Kohli: It was an outstanding innings from Devdutt Padikkal. He had a superb last season too. There was some talk about his acceleration after crossing the 30-run mark and this is the way to put it to rest. It was a good pitch to bat on to be honest, and him being tall meant that bowlers struggled with their lengths. T20 cricket is always about partnership cricket. You can't always go big from the word go. When one guy is going well, it's important for me to ensure that I don't lose my wicket. It can change on other days. We spoke about it (on the 100). He told me to finish it off, I told him to get to it first. He said many will come, I said yea you can say that after you get to the landmark. He deserved to get the three-figure mark. We don't have standout names (in bowling) but we have effective ones. We have depth in our bowling. They are professionals. We have taken the most wickets in the death overs this season so far and it's something we take pride in. Dev's innings was a great one but I'd also like to credit the bowlers for setting it up. (to the fans) I'd say don't be overexcited. We're being professional. We're moving in the right direction.
Time for the Post-match presentation
Glenn Maxwell: Sensational to watch (the winning opening partnership). I was looking to get out there, but the way they got the deficit down between balls and runs was outstanding to watch. We haven't played our best cricket in all facets of the game. We are never satisfied with our work. We want to improve. Probably didn't bowl well. We had them 4 down early and then they got away. (Asked if he taught Devdutt the reverse sweep) I haven't done any work with him yet but I will take some credit because he's hit a couple of them really well. It's been nice to have a little contribution thus far. Hopefully will do well in the coming games.
Sanju Samson: They batted really well. We did well to get that score on the board after the early wickets. We need to go back and do some homework. We need to be honest with ourselves and come back better. Need time to look into what went wrong and understand, I am sure we will comeback well. This game... It puts you down but you need to find a way and come out better.
However, the spotlight should be totally on Devdutt Padikkal who brought up a magnificent maiden IPL century. Padikkal didn't spare anyone as he unfurled some elegant shots all over the pitch. Usage of the feet was especially a highlight of Padikkal's knock as he didn't let Shreyas Gopal and Rahul Tewatia settle into a consistent line and length. Padikkal also showed an innovative streak to his batting by smacking a reverse-sweep off Tewatia. The 20-year-old eventually reached his century with a boundary off Mustafizur Rahman's bowling.
Chasing 178 in search of their fourth victory, RCB got a cracking start from Devdutt Padikkal. The southpaw attacked the Rajasthan opening bowlers and helped RCB get off to a quick start even as the skipper Virat Kohli was struggling with his timing at the other end. Rajasthan decided to attack Kohli with Shreyas Gopal due to his perceived leg-spin weakness but the latter couldn't find any semblance of consistency. Kohli was even meandering at 26 off 24 balls at one point but he eventually accelerated as the innings went on.
What a remarkable performance this has been from RCB. They continue to prove themselves as one of the early favourites for this season. The bowlers set-up the victory even though RR went onto finish with 177-9. After all, RR were reduced to 43-4. However, Shivam Dube, Riyan Parag and Rahul Tewatia counter-attacked to help the side put a respectable total on the board. The RCB death bowlers still did well enough to ensure that the opponents fell at least 20 runs short of what would have been a competitive total.
16.4 Mustafizur Rahman to Devdutt Padikkal
4wd Full-toss down the leg-side, Sanju Samson dives to his left but he can't stop it cleanly. The ball deflects to the fence for five wides. This brings up a dominant 10-wicket victory for RCB with 20 balls to spare
16.3 Mustafizur Rahman to Virat Kohli
1 Off-cutter, Kohli pushes it to cover-point for a single
Sanju Samson has gone for the review, third umpire asks for ultra-edge. Flat line as the ball passes the bat, no bat involved, ball tracking when ready. Impact outside and missing the stumps.
16.2 Mustafizur Rahman to Devdutt Padikkal
1lb Full-toss on the stumps, Padikkal looks to flick but he misses the ball. It rolls towards the off-side and the batsmen take a leg-bye. Mustafizur wants a review and Sanju Samson has agreed to go for one
Anurag Singh: Gee what a shot to bring up his century, and also with the skipper at the other end. Once again knocking the selector's door for the national call-up. A knock to remember for a long long time.
16.1 Mustafizur Rahman to Devdutt Padikkal
4 The magical moment is here!! Full outside-off, Padikkal drives it wide of long-off for a boundary. This brings up a remarkable century
