Whoa, what a fascinating contest that was. Nostalgia in full flow for all the 90's kids and eventually India held their nerves and registered a 12 runs victory. It was a great time in the commentary box to bring you the coverage for such a classic game between some retired legends. Till the next time, it is adieus from me, Arya Sekhar Chakaraborty and my co-commentator Akshay Bhide.
Yuvraj Singh, Player of the Match: I think I got lucky again, got dropped. In these tournaments, I see guys getting dropped and I never got dropped before. So God answered my prayers I guess. They were bowling Tino early, so I was just waiting for the spinners. It was hard to get used to the pitch, was trying to hit too hard. Yusuf told me not to do that. He's been batting really well, been exceptional. We had a big total on the board and that's the reason we could stretch in the end. The way we're playing at the moment, we should be able to beat whoever makes the final. We're focusing on our own cricket. The crowd has been amazing.
Brian Lara, Losing captain: It was amazing, I think the crowd had a great time. For both teams to score 200-plus, I think both sides need to be congratulated. It was tough coming back 24 hours later for another game but the guys did well. Deonarine especially. We thought that we could chase down a target with the batting we have. But Yuvraj just put it out of our reach in those final overs. It's been a good two to three weeks. All the best to India for the finals.
Sachin Tendulkar, Winning captain: A terrific game. The way West Indians approached the target, it was scary at times. At no stage did they look rattled. Wonderful that we held our nerve at the end. Credit to Gony, Irfan and Vinay. Pragyan also got us an important wicket. So the bowlers did well. It was special hitting by Yuvi and Yusuf. After 200, every run is worth double. Last few overs changed the momentum and 218 was a big total. West Indies almost got there but in the end, every run matters. In this format, there is no right or wrong. It's all about the gameplan. Both are good sides(speaking about Sri Lanka and South Africa), they have played competitive cricket. They have all fought hard despite injuries. That's been the beauty of this tournament.
Sachin Tendulkar, the India Legends Captain win the CricPlay Game Changer of the Match.
Arya: It was nostalgia right from the start of the day as yet again Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar got the Indians off to a great start after SRT lost the toss and the hosts were put in. Virender Sehwag blazed his way to a 17 balls 35 which allowed Tendulkar to get his eyes in. After Sehwag's dismissal, it was a lul in the middle as Mohammad Kaif was unable to find the middle of the bat until an over from Dwayne Smith where he smashed 16 runs in just 3 deliveries. His dismissal brought in Yusuf Pathan and right from the word go he was striking the ball brilliantly. Tendulkar on the other hand continued his good form and rolled back the years yet again. Some of his trademark shots were on display for the second time as he smashed his 2nd half-century on a trot. He smashed 6 fours and 3 sixes en route a to a knock of 65 of 42 deliveries. Yet again it was Yuvraj Singh who stole the show with another breezy knock of 49 of just 20 deliveries. Again he smashed 4 sixes in an over and it looked as if we were in the early 2000s. He was dropped but he made full use of the reprieve and went onto make amends. Eventually, it was his special knock that propelled India Legends to a massive score of 218 runs.
Arya: West Indies lost one more in the very next over in the form of Kirk Edwards but from there on it was a special partnership between "Prince" Brian Lara and Deonarine. Lara in particular rolled back the years and started toying with the Indian attack. It never looked like he has been out of the game for over a decade. The southpaw literally clobbered his way to a knock of 46 of 28 deliveries which was laced with 4 fours and a couple of sixes. His wicket in the 19th over again tilted the scales in India's favour. In between, it was a brilliant 18th over from Gony whose 7 runs over ensured Vinay Kumar had 25 to play with coming into the penultimate over. He responded to his captain's call and bowled a sensational 19th over bagging the wickets of Lara and Tino Best. In the end the target proved to be way too much as Irfan Pathan bowled a magnificent final over to seal the game for the India Legends.
Arya: Chasing a huge target of 219 runs, the West Indies Legends got off to a brilliant start courtesy a poor opening over from Irfan Pathan. After a 19 runs opening over, it was MS Gony who gave India the opening breakthrough in the form of William Perkins. From there it was sheer carnage from Dwayne Smith. He was in a different league altogether as he took the Indian bowlers by the scruff of the neck and smashed them all around Raipur. That was a special knock from Smith as he breezed his way to a knock of 63 of just 36 deliveries which was studded with 9 fours and a couple of sixes. Narsingh Deonarine also played a gem of a knock at the other end and played the second fiddle to Smith. It was Irfan Pathan who bagged the crucial wicket of Dwayne Smith and the hosts stormed their way back into the game.
Arya: What a match. Words won't be enough to describe the intensity players from both sides showed today. In the end, it was the India Legends who held their nerves and eeked out a 12 runs victory.
Akshay: Brilliant finish to the first semi-final as the Indian bowlers held their nerves against the West Indies batting line up. Some relieved faces in the Indian camp as they beat the West Indies Legends by 12 runs and enter the Final. Lara tried his level best along with Deonarine but it proved to be too much in the end.
