Sourya: This Pakistan team has oodles of talent, but need to up their game big time if they are to compete in this series. Tonight though, belongs to the hosts. It is time for me, Sourya Chowdhury to bid goodbye rather earlier than anticipated, along with my fellow commentators Akshay Bhide and Arjun Bhalla. Goodnight, see you soon.
Sourya: Captain Ben Stokes was also on top of the game and at his aggressive best. Babar Azam said after the match: "Credit to England for this," he says. "We didn't get momentum, or a big partnership. Fakhar carried his form on from South Africa. We are looking forward to Lord's and we have to try and do our best." Ben Stokes: "Very clinical performance, massively ahead of the game, which helps, especially when captaining for the first time. When you get a new group together you are striving for that first team performance, but we weren't put under pressure today, not every game of cricket goes that smoothly. My message was go out and do what you do for your counties, and enjoy the situation we're in." Saqib Mahmood was declared the man of the match: "As a team you want to win, and as a player you want to contribute. First you've got to read the conditions, guys tried to hit their lengths, and we were able to set attacking fields. Hopefully guys can take confidence from this, another important game coming up in a couple of days."
Sourya: Shaheen Afridi got the only wicket to fall for Babar Azam's men, who looked quite off the pace in this encounter. The tall, lanky pacer was the only one to have a decent run rate, with the other bowlers all going for more than 6 runs per over at a minimum. But though Crawley and Malan put up a batting masterclass, England had won the game with the ball in the first innings. Young Saqib Mahmood got a wicket off the very first ball of the match by trapping Imam-ul-Haq in front of the stumps that was adjudged lbw on review. A ball later, he got the prized scalp of Azam with one that was bowled in the right channel on off and moved off the seam slightly to induce the edge to Crawley at second slip. Mahmood bowled an exemplary first spell of seam bowling and finished with figures of 42/4. Craig Overton (2/23 in 6.2) and Lewis Gregory (1/11 in 4) also bowled productive spells as England's band of debutants and greenhorns made merry on their way to a deserving win. Leg spinner Matt Parkinson also picked up two wickets, with only Fakhar Zaman playing some nice strokes and looking in good touch, before he threw his wicket away with a poor shot on 47. Shadab Khan had huffed and puffed to 30 to become the second highest-scorer for Pakistan on a forgettable day.
Sourya: England have cantered to a 9-wicket win over Pakistan in the first ODI at Cardiff, today. It was a formidable performance from England with both bat and ball and in effect, the team flexed their muscles in front of the world today, showing that even their reserve-bench players are good enough to beat any team on their day. Captain for the day, Ben Stokes won the toss and was prompt in inserting the visitors into bat. The world champions then proceeded to promptly bundle out the Men in Green for 141 in 35.2 overs. And though Phil Salt got out early, Zak Crawley, on debut, and Dawid Malan stitched together a delectable partnership of 120 runs off 106 balls to take England home in a mere 21.2 overs. Crawley and Malan displayed stellar timing and a penchant for rotating the strike, with the former remaining not out on 58(50) and Malan reaching 68 off 69 balls.
21.5 S Shakeel to Z Crawley
1 SINGLE AND END OF THE GAME!!! A clinical victory from this inexperienced English side. Was a touch short outside off-stump, Crawley punched it towards sweeper cover to take the single and seal the deal for his side!! It might be "coming home", on Monday, but today Crawley has taken England taken home!
