We have just witnessed the craziest game of cricket here. This game had everything- tons, sixes, wickets, fielders flying in the air, twists, heartbreaks, redemptions. A lot to take in a single night. This is what T20 cricket is all about. It was exciting to bring this game to you. I'm Akshay Bhide, along with co-commentator Arjun Bhalla signing off. Do join us tomorrow at 7 PM as RCB take on MI. Ta Ta.
Highest successful chase in IPL: 223 RR vs KXIP Sharjah 2020 Today
Most runs scored in the last five overs of a successful run chase in IPL: 86 RR vs KXIP Sharjah 2020 Today
Sanju Samson - Player of the Match: I have been hitting it well for the past one year. So I was just sticking to my routine and feeling confident. I am happy to win a few games. I did a lot of soul searching after being frustrated at trying stuff. So I decided if I had ten more years of cricket left in me, I want to go back and give my everything.
Sanju Samson is adjudged Man of the Match for his 85 off 42 balls comprising of 4 fours and 7 sixes.
Steve Smith - Winning captain: That was some chase! Tewatia, that was some sort of display against Cottrell. We got an idea about the conditions here in the last game. It's a small ground, we always thought if we have wickets in the shed we always have a chance. Samson is hitting sixes at will at the moment. We saw in the nets that he was hitting the ball like he did in that over to Cottrell. Credit to him. Three sixes off Cottrell would have got us back in that game, that's great self-belief. Looked like we could be chasing over 250 at one point, credit to the bowlers for pulling things back.
KL Rahul - Losing captain: Look, this is T20 cricket, we have seen it so many years now, we did a lot of things right, we have to keep our chin up and come back stronger. A lot of positives tonight, we did a lot of things right, but such things do happen, great game of cricket, we have to give it to them (Rajasthan Royals). The game keeps you humble all the time, I honestly did think we had the game in our pocket. Towards the end they batted well and put pressure on our bowlers which led to mistakes. I back them to do the job, they have done well in the last two games, it's OK to have one bad game. It's good that this came early in the tournament, they will only learn from this and come back strongly. Small grounds and the total doesn't really matter. We have seen in the last seven or eight games - be it in Sharjah or in Dubai, the bowlers are going the distance at the back end in this tournament so far, the teams are backing their batsmen to have a go at the death and get those big overs - Sanju Samson and Rahul Tewatia did really well, they were set, played superbly well and they deserve this win.
Rahul Tewatia - Now, I'm better. That was the worst first 20 balls that I have ever played. I was hitting the ball very good in the nets, so I had belief in myself and kept going. I was not hitting the ball well initially, I saw in the dug-out, everybody was curious as they know that I can hit the ball long. It was a matter of one six, after that, I got going. I hit five in an over and it was amazing. Coach sent me to hit sixes off the leg-spinner, but unfortunately I didn't hit him. Ultimately, I hit off the other bowlers.
And here's the man of the moment- Rahul Tewatia
Earlier in the day, Smith won the toss and opted to chase on this small ground. The first innings was all about Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul. They put on 183 for the opening wicket. The Royals bowlers had no answers to them. Mayank brought up his maiden IPL ton of just 46 balls. Rahul too was very good for his 69. Maxwell and Pooran provided the finishing touches in the end and they put on the record total to chase in front of RR.
Archer too scored 13 off 3 balls hitting 2 maximums. Tom Curran in the last over finished the match in style and completed an incredible victory.
Samson departed on 85 off 42 balls in the 17th over. Everyone thought this was the game for Kings XI but Tewatia had other plans. He absolutely belted Cottrell in the 18th over hitting 5 maximum of it and brought RR back in the game. He scored 53 off 31 balls comprising of 7 sixes and departed when they were on the brink of the victory.
The Royals' chase didn't start on a positive note as they lost Buttler in the 3rd over. But Smith and Samson steadied the ship and put on 81 between them. Smith brought up his 10th IPL 50 but departed soon. Rahul Tewatia replaced Smith and the move raised many eyebrows. Samson was going strong but Tewatia was really struggling to rotate strike. Samson even refused to give strike to Tewatia later on.
Rajasthan Royals beat Kings XI Punjab by 4 wickets and chase the highest total in IPL History. Also, the chase is the highest total at Sharjah.
19.3 Murugan Ashwin to Tom Curran
4 FOUR!!!!! This is game is over! Murugan Ashwin tries to bowl a fuller ball and Tom Curran steps down and lofts the ball before the ball can even pitch. Tom Curran swings the bat towards long off for a boundary. RR chases down the score of 224 runs in 19.3 over. RR wins by 4 wickets!
Is there a twist in the end? Well this match has been full of twists. 2 needed of 4
19.2 Murugan Ashwin to Riyan Parag
W WICKET! RR needs 2 runs from the last four balls. Googly ball, Riyan Parag goes on his knees to sweep the ball, Murugan spun the ball a long way and Rayan is bowled by Murugan Ashwin!
19.1 Murugan Ashwin to Riyan Parag
0 DOT! 2 from 5 balls. A yorker like ball by Ashwin and Riyan digs it but no run
