Unfortunately, the career of Sean Abbott couldn’t quite reach the level which was expected of him when he burst onto the scene as a youngster. Despite his abilities to bowl fast and trouble opposition batsmen with his pace and swing, Abbott will be remembered as the bowler whose well-directed bouncer was responsible for the death of Philip Hughes. With Hughes batting on 63, Abbott bowled a good bouncer and Hughes attempted a pull which missed his bat and struck him on the neck. Abbott couldn’t quite do justice to his potential in the next few years and he took time to recover from that traumatic situation.
Abbott is one of the most talented fast bowlers in the Australian domestic circuit and also has the ability to play the big shots. He is a wicket-taking bowler who made his ODI and T20I debut against Pakistan in 2014. However, he hasn’t been able to play any more ODI so far. He made a return to international cricket in 2019 after a brilliant season with the ball for the Sydney Sixers in the BBL. He established himself as one of the finest death bowlers in the tournament and got his place back in the Australian set-up.
Having made his debut for New South Wales at the age of 18, Abbott was superb with the ball bagging 16 wickets in the Ryobi Cup. He kept taking wickets on a consistent basis in Shield cricket and was awarded the Steve Waugh Medal as the best New South Wales player of the season. It was on the back of some impressive returns that Abbott got his maiden opportunity for Australia in the limited-overs series against Pakistan.
After a five years sabbatical from international cricket, Abbott finally managed to break into the side for the ODI series against England in 2020 but didn’t manage to play a single game. Yet again he had a great season with the ball in the Sheffield Shield and was awarded a spot in the Australian limited-overs and Test side for the 2020-21 home series against India.
