Billy's Bio

The younger brother of England Test captain, Joe Root, Billy Root has always lived under the shadow of his elder brother, who has made quite a name for himself at the international level.

Billy came up from University level, playing for MCCU and made his first-class debut against Sussex in 2015.

The next season was a fruitful one for Billy, as he struck a career-best 133 against Sussex and his ability to bat well under pressure situations garnered interest from Nottinghamshire who signed him on a two-year deal in 2017.

Opportunities were limited at Nottinghamshire, however, he did top the club averages in T20 cricket as well as scoring a sublime century in the final Championship game of the season at Hove.

Post the 2017 season, Billy joined Glamorgan on a two-year basis, and on his debut for his new club, Root struck a magnificent 100 in the first innings.

In the 2021 County season, Billy Root finally squared off against Joe Root as Glamorgan faced Yorkshire. Fittingly in the second innings, Billy tucked the ball past his elder brother to complete a century under pressure.

When your elder brother is one of the finest cricketers of this generation, fitting yourself into the cricketing world seems difficult. That’s what Billy Root had to deal with when the Yorkshire born joined the County circuit. The expectations were high when Billy entered the cricketing frame, but so far he has failed to live up to the expectations of the people.
