Player Bio

Middle-order batsman, William Alexander Young has the willingness to bat for longer periods with a bonafide defense. Young plays for the New Zealand national team and the Central Stags.

Will Young made his first-class debut for Central Stags against Auckland on March 2, 2012. Soon after his announcement to the domestic circuit, Young was made the captain of the New Zealand U-19 team for the ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup in 2012.

At the age of 23, Young was hand-picked to captain the Central Stags in December 2015.

Under his captaincy, Central districts became the champions of the Ford Trophy in 2015-16.

Young, predominantly a red-ball player, led his side unbeaten in the Plunket Shield in 2018, amassing 686 runs in 10 games.

The pressure of captaincy deprived him of the batting masterclass he was and eventually, he decided to step down from the captaincy. In December 2018, Young was named in New Zealand's Test squad for the first time against Sri Lanka, but he could not get a chance to play.

A few months later, the New Plymouth-based cricketer was labelled to make his debut against Bangladesh in March 2019 in test cricket, however, a terrorist attack in Christchurch saw the match cancelled by the New Zealand cricket board.

A major setback in Young’s career was the shoulder injury, which forced him to opt-out of the reserve squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Despite his injury, Young scored back-to-back centuries against Australia in a three-match unofficial ODI series and after a long haul of the battle against all odds, Young made his test debut against West Indies on December 3, 2020. Will Young made his ODI debut on March 23, 2021 against Bangladesh. However, he could score only one run in the match.
