India cricketer Rohit Sharma has been nominated for the highest sporting honour of the country- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, Table Tennis star Manika Batra and para athlete’s Mariyappan Thangavelu are some of the other major names recommended by the Sports Awards Committee on Tuesday.
The last time four athletes were nominated for the prestigious award was back in 2016. PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Dipa Karmakar received the award for their prolific performances. Shooter Jitu Rai was awarded the same four years ago.
“The awards this year will be given virtually by President Ram Nath Kovind. The ceremony will be conducted as is being done every year but the awardees will be present online. The awards will be handed later,” said a source to Hindustan Times.
Rohit will have the company of some of the elite cricketers. Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli were awarded the prestigious award earlier. Vinesh bagged a gold medal at the 2018 Asian Games and bronze at the World Championships last year. Manika Batra won four medals at the 2018 Commonwealth games. Rohit will be seen in action at the upcoming Indian Premier League. He is currently the most successful skipper in the domestic T20 competition, winning the title on four occasions.
