Anil Kumble, Kings XI Punjab head coach and director of cricket operations, believes the priority will be to keep the players in a good mental space during the Indian Premier League 2020. The premium T20 competition is set to commence on September 19.
According to the former India skipper, handling anxiety will be key. Majority of the players have been confined to their rooms due to the rise in COVID-19 cases. Hence, it would take time for them to regain 100% fitness. Injecting confidence will be one of the key roles for the management.
“Players are eager to get out and play. But you have to pull them back, because they haven’t played enough in recent times to go at 100% from day one. You have to gradually build up their skill level and fitness, and ease them into match-readiness,” Kumble was quoted while speaking to the media at the sidelines of a training session for the Karnataka cricketers.
“The players will naturally ask themselves, ‘Am I ready to play?’ It takes time to get ready. The most important aspect we (coaching staff) must address is to help players cope with this anxiety,” he added.
Five Karnataka cricketers in the KXIP squad have hit the nets in Bengaluru. Skipper KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair, K Gowtham and J Suchith are sweating it out under the supervision of Kumble. The side will play a few practice games ahead of the start of the tournament.
