County Championship 2022 | Hameed and Mullaney put Nottinghampshire on driving seat against Middlesex
12 May 2022
The season's first 'Roses rivalry' began at Headingley in a typical English overcast environment. Hopeful of taking full advantage of the playing conditions, Yorkshire opted to bowl after winning the toss.
The home team even reduced Lancashire to 12/2 at the end of eleven overs. Jordan Thompson sent back Wells on eight by having him caught behind. The in-form Josh Bohannon became Thompson's second victim, who trapped him LBW for just 2.
Bohannon's wicket brought Steven Croft to the crease as he joined opener Keaton Jennings. The duo saw off the first session without any further damage. Rotating the strike and taking a total toll on the scoring opportunities were the highlights of the partnership.
In the second session, Jennings reached the three-figure mark, continuing his fine form from the last match. His second consecutive century in the County Championship Division One allowed the visitors to come back after losing two wickets early. The England discard is still going strong on 150, which has come off 280 balls. He has struck twenty-two boundaries and will look to add to the tally on the second day.
Croft gave the Lancashire opener good company and added 237 runs for the third wicket. In the final session, the former brought up his century but fell to Haris Rauf shortly after reaching the landmark. However, his knock of 104 off 231 balls was crucial in the game's context. Croft registered sixteen fours and a six to his name during his vigil at the crease.
Jennings and skipper Dane Vilas batted out the remaining 11-odd overs. They will resume the proceedings on Day 2, with Yorkshire hoping to make early inroads.
Lancashire 1st innings: 288/3 vs Yorkshire
